Modern homebrewing began with the signing of legislation; President Jimmy Carter signed H.R. 1337 in 1978, effectively legalizing the home-production of beer nationwide. This sparked a revolution in the minds of people, and eventually led to the craft beer revolution and the resurgence of discovering old styles of beer and re-inventing them to fit American tastes. The American Brown ale was among the first adapted styles. Deriving from English-style brown ales, the American versions were stronger and hoppier, with less focus on malt sweetness and yeast flavors.
Our 1337 Brown is our ode to this brewing tradition. Deep chocolate and caramel malt notes are balanced by firm bittering and citrusy, floral notes from American style hops. American ale yeasts keep the beer clean and crisp, rather than the fruity tones often found in English style Browns. Drinking this beer is drinking a slice of history!
